Kaspar Forster: Vanitas vanitatum
Kaspar Förster (1616−1673), of Gdańsk, was a distinguished vocalist and composer of exceptional individuality, who typified a European citizen living within a culturally united community of nations. The son of a kapellmeister at the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary, whose monumental Gothic proportions dominated the old Gdańsk skyline, he was raised in a wealthy Hanseatic city belonging to the Polish Crown, albeit traditionally linked through strong economic ties to countries of western and northern Europe.
